The third generation Chevrolet Camaro was the first Camaro built without front subframes or leaf-spring rear suspensions and spanned years 1982-1992. These Camaros front ends were held up by a modified MacPherson strut system and the hind end a long torque arm and coil springs. These were also the first with factory fuel injection, four-speed automatic transmissions, five-speed manual transmissions, four-cylinder engines, 16-inch wheels and hatchback bodies.
The 1982 Camaro was, for the first time since 1967, all new and slightly smaller.
Again this year, a Z28 Camaro paced the Indianapolis 500 and silver and blue replicas of the car, although not the highly modified 350 V8 that was used, were made available to the public, probably the most attractive of the ‘82’s.
The three tier Camaro lineup continued in 1983 with minimal visual differences but the Z28 did get a power boost with the introduction of the L69 engine option that could be backed by a new 5-speed manual transmission.
The big leap forward of this generation came with the new and famous 1985 model IROC-Z named after the International Race of Champions. This new IROC-Z Camaro featured a 305 Tuned Port Injection engine taken from the Corvette and upgraded suspension making Car and Driver magazine’s Ten Best list for the same year.

Making a comeback for 1987 was the big engine and the convertible with the good old 350 V8 becoming an option in IROC-Z’s. The 1987 Camaros, unlike the earlier models, were built as RPO CC1 Coupes and then converted by ASC Incorporated.
By 1988, the Z28 had been replaced by IROC’s for all high performance Camaros. Meanwhile the base Camaros took on the looks of the Z28 with its lower body skirting and wheels. 1990 would be the last model year for the Camaro IROC though as Dodge picked up sponsorship of the International Race of Champions.

However, Z28 would make a comeback in 1991 although with few changes made, other than cosmetic, it was still an IROC with a top V8 245 horsepower engine. By this time, all other 1991 Chevy Camaros were pretty much ‘90’s with revised ground effects.

Also at this time, geared toward law enforcement, the Camaro B4C pursuit vehicle was introduced. This Camaro was basically a Z28 badged as an RS equipped with the 1LE race package. Very few were produced. With a new Chevrolet Camaro coming for 1993, the only change in 1992 was a “25th Anniversary” badge on the instrument panel of all Camaros.

With the many third generation Camaros available, Eckler’s knows you have a lot of choices and we hope we are your choice for all your Chevy Camaro needs. We stock a wide selection of third generation Camaro products and our experts are always available to answer your questions.
