When you want your screen door to close every time it's used, install a door closer, a spring or chose a more elegant solution without a lot of extra hardware: spring-loaded hinges. Self-closing hinges take the place of regular hinges; they allow adjustment so the screen door closes securely without slamming. When you properly attach the hinges to the outside of the door and frame, it exposes the adjustment mechanisms for easy access. You can make the adjustments with a pin or hex wrench. Spring-loaded hinges are actually easier to install than regular hinges.

1

Set the screen door inside the frame on shims to ensure a gap between the bottom of the door and the frame. Use more shims to center the door in the frame, verifying a gap of at least 1/4 inch on all sides. Level the door with a 4-foot level.

2

Open one hinge and place it against the outside of the door and frame, about 6 inches from the top of the door. Center the hinge pin between the door and the frame and mark the positions of the holes with a pencil.

3

Remove the hinge and drill a pilot hole on each mark with a 1/8-inch drill bit. Replace the hinge, line it up with the holes and drive a screw into each one. The screws usually come with the hinges, but if not, use 1 1/4-inch wood screws.

4

Install the hinge the same distance up from the bottom of the door as completed for the top following the same procedure.

Things You Will Need

  • Shims
  • 4-foot level
  • Pencil
  • Drill
  • 1/8-inch drill bit
  • 1 1/4-inch wood screws
  • Screwdriver

Tips

  • If your door is unusually heavy, you may need to install a third hinge midway between the other two to get the proper closing action.
  • Adjust the self-closing door hinge with the screen door shut. Follow manufacturer's instructions for proper adjustment dependent upon the type of hinge you have with either the tension pin or hex wrench.

Warning

  • Verify the door is level before you install the hinges or it won't close properly.

A door closer keeps the cool air and pets indoors by automatically closing a door left casually ajar. When your arms are full of groceries, or small children, door closers come in handy. Over time, the repeated use of a door closer wears out the spring, and the connecting chain can break. Replace any of the three overhead closers -- the regular arm, top jamb and parallel arm -- as well as a bottom-left or right-side closer. Swapping out an old broken closer for a new one only takes a few minutes.

1

Examine the door closer. Look at the top and bottom of the door. The closer is a long pneumatic tube attached to a bracket. Some doors have two closers. Determine which closer needs changing, or change both, if applicable. One side of the closer is held on the door by a two-screw bracket, the other by a bracket and pin.

2

Remove the pin from the bracket. Use a cordless drill with a Phillips-head screwdriver bit to remove the two screws on the opposite end of the door closer. This will leave the brackets in place. Realflow cinema 4d r15 plugin free download. You should remove the brackets if new brackets are included with your replacement.

3

Lift away the pneumatic door closer tube. Shake it slightly; you may hear a broken spring inside. Replace the old brackets with the new ones in your kit. Use the former screw holes as guides. If the new closer is made by a different manufacturer, you'll need to redrill holes according to the door closer's diagram.

4

Replace the closer tube, first attaching one end to the door with the new pin that came with your replacement. Tap the pin into place gently with your fingers or a hammer if needed. Line up the opposite end of the tube with the screw holes left behind by the previous closer. Use the drill and screw in the closer's screws. This will secure the tube into place.

5

Lay a small level on top of the tube. Check the level. Tighten the screws or loosen them to make the tube level. Adjust the force and speed of the door closer by twisting the tube. This feature is only available on some door closer models; for others, you must replace the tube for changes in closing velocity. For example, a 2-pound closer uses minimal force, but a 10-pound closer uses a heavier closing force.

6

Test the door's closing power and make any adjustments you need. Use a handheld screwdriver to adjust the screws to adjust the force.

Things You Will Need

  • Cordless drill
  • Drill bit
  • Level
  • Hammer
  • Handheld screwdriver

Tip

  • Some door closers come with a chain that attaches to the closer and the door. Hold the door open by opening it fully and sliding the movable mount over to the end of the tube.
