Sib. 4.1: USB Keypad?
Posted by CallMeZoot - 06 Feb 12:26AM
Argh. I bought the Belkin USB Keypad that is listed on this forum, but it is NOT actually compatible.
The Enter key on the keypad does NOT trigger the tie, as it should. It triggers the 'make new system' as if I were hitting the regular keyboard's Enter key.
Can anyone recommend a portable USB keypad that EXACTLY mimics a regular keypad for Sibelius?
Better yet, is there any kind of cheap piece of software that will re-map inputs from a USB keypad (without remapping the main keyboard) so that I can use the one I already bought?
Thanks,
chris.

My Targus does exactly the same. I think they all do. I don't think there is a single USB keypad whose NumEnter key doesn't send the QWERTY Enter signal.
So I think your only options are:
-get a complete USB keyboard for your laptop
-use the mouse for ties
-asign a different keyboard shortcut
Perhaps someone has found a Num Keypad to prove me wrong---hope so.

I opted for a USB keyboard. It's a lightweight Saitek and cost less than £5 in a Maplin's sale. Just fits in the laptop bag and works a treat.

I have an old Targus (Mod. PAUK001 v3.0) right here in my hand and it does exactly what it's supposed to (the Targus that is, not the hand).

My Targus keypad will not enter a tie either. Since no one has responded to this in awhile, I wonder if anyone has come up with a solution since the last response? So far, my only solution is to use the mouse and click on the tie on the screen.

I have had similar issues. Especially with the mac. It was something that happened in this version for me because it was never an issue before. I end up just using the mouse for ties.

If nothing else, you can go to File > Preferences > Menus and Shortcuts, and find either
Keypad(F8 Common) - Tie
or
Keypad(all) - Enter on Keypad
and assign one of them to another key.
I don't think you can assign it to one of the keypad keys, but something unused on the main keyboard should work. It would at least get you away from the mouse.

One could simply assign Enter(Return on Mac)and loose or reassign the keyboard shortcut for Respell Accidental/Edit Text.
Another option to consider would be to assign Ctrl/Enter or Alt/Enter and reassign the Page or System Break to Ctrl/Slash or Alt/Slash. These commands make more sense for the breaks in my thinking.
Quite a few options. However, this may cause further confusion when new features are added to Sibelius.
What was that full keyboard that fits in a laptop case?

I have ordered an M-Audio Oxygen 8 to help solve some of these allocation problems. Biggest problem I have had with note entry on my laptop Powerbook is chord entry. I would prefer to enter the chords from the piano keyboard. I picked the Oxy8 25keys because it just fits my lap when sitting in my arm chair that is in front of the TV. I enter music while watching TV, when not seated at my main dual G5 computer.
Up to now I have been mapping all the functions to my left hand so that I can hold music, etc in my right hand.
This is what I use at the moment.
Opt zxcasdqwe for note duration.
12345678 (keyboard top) for note interval up (+shft for down).
Tab for note forward. (shft Tab for back).
Shift ABCDEFG for add selected note above.
Opt R for dot (.)
Opt 123 for > . -
Opt F(repeated) for keypad menu changes 1,2,3,4,All.
Opt V for tie
R for repeat of course.
So far nothing for tie. I use the on screen keypad for this too.
This could all change when I get my Oxy8.
