Ok, so I switched from Evil Company number 1 (Verizon DSL) to Evil Company number 2 (Comcast Cable). We were one of the first towns to get Fios, but they stopped at the intersection up the street and never bothered to run the line to the last 10 houses (of which I am one) since the line go from poles to underground.
Here's the issue. I switched to Comcast's Xfinity package with 12Mbps/4Mbps internet in November 2011. Everything was going smoothly for about 3-4 months, then suddenly in February, I'd be downloading or trying to access a page or stream a video and my download speed would bottom out at 1Mbps or below; sometimes it looks like it hits 0. I run some tests during these times and my ping is beautiful, my upload speed remains at 4Mbps, but just my download has turned to mud. I contact Comcast repeatedly, complain, switch out my router. Comcast mostly just resets the modem and says everything looks fine and call them back if it's happening again later. One tech even boosted my speed to 25Mbps/4Mbps, but this didn't help anything (however, I am now at those speeds while on the same price plan). This goes on for A MONTH..I'll usually get my full speed for awhile, then wham, back to 1Mbps. The problem seems to 'self resolve' after a month and I figure they fixed something on their end and never admitted it. Now 3-4 months have passed again(July) and I'm running into the same issue. Ping and Upload continue to remain just fine during this period.
A Shaperprobe run reveals I'm being shaped at a speed of 15Mbps/2Mbps (configuration file on the modem never properly updated?) when Speedtest.net reports my speed at 25/4.
Any thoughts on what the cause could be? Am I the recipient of some Comcast extreme throttling?
